When it

comes to marketing your business, having a range of strategies is a must if you’re to enjoy any long-term success. One of the most effective yet often overlooked forms of marketing is SMS or mobile marketing. Mobile Marketing

We live in a day an age where virtually everyone in the western world has some form of mobile device, so ignoring a form of advertising that capitalizes on an audience of that size is insane. But how does SMS marketing work?

When we talk about SMS marketing we’re most commonly referring to bulk broadcast messaging where one message is sent to all of your subscribers. The message you send them will normally be some form of promotion, whether it’s a voucher code, or a message to alert customers about an upcoming sale.

The statistics say that at least 95% of people open a text message in the first 15 minutes compared to 10% of people who open an email message within a 24 hour time span. With figures like that it’s easy to see why SMS marketing tends to get such a great response.

These text campaigns are also fairly easy to set up. Generally you simply need a way of capturing and storing subscriber’s telephone numbers, and then a platform for you to compose and send your messages. Even though it’s very possible for you to manage your own SMS marketing campaigns, some people prefer to leave it in the hands of marketing experts who have experience in the mobile marketing business, and know how to optimize a campaign for maximum benefit.

Regardless of whether you look after your campaigns yourself, or whether you call in a professional a number of factors remain. A successful broadcast needs to have a number of components.

  1. A clear, concise message- You only have a limited amount of characters to utilize in a text message so you need to grab your reader’s attention quickly, yet in a way that gets a clear message across. If they don’t understand what your message is about they don’t understand what your message is about they won’t respond.
  2. A call to action- Giving your subscribers a money off voucher is no use unless you clearly explain how they’re supposed to use it. You must let your reader know exactly what action they need to take next, even if it seems obvious to you. Customers need to be told what you want them to do or they won’t do anything.
  3. A way to unsubscribe- In some countries this is now a legal issue so you don’t want to cut corners. You MUST provide a simple way for subscribers to unsubscribe from your list in your messages.
